Rare three window all steel coupe

WOW, WOW, WOW!  These are the words that come to mind when I think about this unbelievable classic 1936 Olds thats been nick named OldsRod. Over all the years of going to car shows, auctions, reading magazines, surfing the internet and owning a lot of classic cars and trucks Ive only seen a few Hot Rods that do what this Hot Rod does for me.  Its a very rare all steel Oldsmobile which makes it extremely unique.  The body lines, paint, interior, engine compartment and under carriage is simply gorgeous. Listed below is a complete description with multiple photos.

Body:

1.    Body is all original steel that has been reworked to deliver the straightness of todays high end hot rod builds.
2.    Custom made running boards were created to give the Olds that sleek and low appearance.
3.    The hood was installed with a custom made tilt forward chrome bracket unit that has a hood locking pin connect to the e-brake, pull the e-brake & you unlock the hood.
4.    Moving to the doors, and wanting to continue that smooth look the door handles were removed and small trick door buttons that are power door buttons were installed, these are one of a kind and they look and work great!!
5.    Still wanting to give the doors a more modern appearance the wind wings were removed and One piece power glass windows were installed, this did the trick and gave the sides of the Olds that smooth look.
6.    Next the drip rails were cut down and smoothed out to improve on the sleek look. This really completed the cool look.
7.    With the body work done there were two things left to complete the outside of the Olds; Add custom made side mirrors that were made for this car to each door and then tint all the Olds glass a smoke gray to finish the OldsRod once painted and  job completed.
8.    The trunk lid has been smoothed to give the back of the Olds that sleek look that the builder was striving to achieve.
9.    The rear bumper and brackets were removed and the bracket holes in the fenders were filled in to remove that dated look given off with the bumper in the rear.
10.    Custom tail lights were designed and handmade and molded into the body to achieve that cool look.
11.    Just below the tail lights and molded into the body are the special stainless exhaust tips that complete the Perfect Look as you approach the back of the Olds.
12.    Back up front to create that Cool look the bumper was removed and the holes in the front fenders were filled in to give that front of the Olds rounded appearance.
13.    Next the headlights were removed from the upper sides of the radiator shell and move down to special built mounts for the headlights between the fenders and the lower radiator shell.
14.    With the need to add modern turn signals to the Olds, small turn signal lights were add under the round head lights, they look like they belong there.
15.    For the finishing touch to the front the stock grill and hood ornament were refinished to complete the front end of the Olds.
16.    Now we are ready to select the new color of the Olds to give it that rich and expensive appearance, Mercedes Silver was the perfect color to achieve that look.
17.    The Olds is painted and looked amazing. But it needed one more touch and that was a flame job. So a famous flame painter was commissioned (Art Himsi.) to create the flames that would Wow the individuals reviewing the Olds, Decide for yourself.
18.    At this point the Olds was in need of a Name So it was only fitting that it be christened The OldsRod

Interior:

1.    First, the Olds needed a new special dash to set off the interior so after some shopping it was decided that a 1936 Packard dash was the look the Olds was going to need.
2.    Next step was to cover the dash in the dark gray leather that would be in the rest of the car.
3.    A special one off polished billet gauge bezel to hold the Steward Warner gauges was designed and built to hold Speedo, Gas, Oil, Volts, & Temp.
4.    Right below the above bezel is another one off polished Billet bezel that holds the key ignition and a switch that turns on gauge lights and a 2nd switch that turns on interior lights.
5.    The Packard dash has 2 glove compartments; one on each side of the dash, the drivers side compartment houses; the A/C controller, windshield wiper switch & the electric cowl vend opener.
6.    The glove compartment on the passenger side is used for a glove compartment. As a final touch both compartment doors were trimmed in polished stainless to give a special look to the overall dash.
7.    A tilt steering column was installed and painted Mercedes gray to match the paint on both the exterior & interior. A polished billet Specialty Half wrap steering wheel sits atop the column.
8.    Another touch to the dash was to add a special built 2.5 tack to the lower drivers side of the steering column. This is a really special piece that looks perfect in that spot.
9.    There were many polished billet pieces that were one off pieces made for the interior of the Olds; here as some of those pieces; Door sills, Gas, Brake, and high beam lever, All door handles, arm rest cups, seat adjusters, power window switch bezels, Rear view mirror and all interior light bezels to capture most of them.
10.    Keeping with the Name OldsRod several of the pieces like the door sills & the gauge bezel have the OldsRod name engraved into those pieces. Very cool.
11.    Dark gray rich leather was selected for the interior with a matching carpet to deliver the nice contrast to exterior & interior paint.
12.    Special bucket seats were selected and upholstered in the leather and at the top of the seat back the OldsRod name was stitched into the leather.
13.    Special door panels were built and upholstered in dark gray leather and to make them stand out. two polished stainless strips made into circles were encased in the leather of the panels.
14.    The area behind the seats needed some attention so fabrication was called for and delivered with encasing the area behind the seats with a carpeted wall and leather line package tray just below the back window that reaches across the entire back. There are also compartments for storage built into each side behind the seats.
15.    While the interior was being completed the trunk area was being planned as it needed to tie into the OldsRod interior and it turned out well. Leather & carpet along with special building of an area to house some controls did the trick.
16.    Every Hot Rod needs a great sound system and so did the OldsRod so a complete Sony system with CD changer was mounted in the back wall and made convenient to reach. Sounds come from kick panel speakers, overhead tweeters, and a 10 subwoofer that got mounted below the Sony unit in the back wall. Tunes are concert level.
17.    The OldsRod is cool and the goal was to keep the driver & passenger cool. So a complete Vintage Air system was installed with vents directly positioned at individuals in the car.

     Goal Accomplished.

Drivetrain:

1.    Selecting the right wheels for the OldsRod required more than just selecting wheels available to everyone. So Wheel Vintiques was commissioned to make a set of one off wheels with knock-off spinners that were worthy of such a special car,
2.    The final wheels were polished billet aluminum called the Mirage Series; Backs are; 18x9.5 and fronts are; 17x8.
3.    Tires on the OldsRod needed to be the best so BF Goodrich was selected with 235x50x18 on the back and 235x45x17 on the front.
4.    4-wheel power disc brakes with a custom power brake booster fitted under the car on the drivers side along with a custom billet remote reservoir in the engine compartment for servicing the fluid.
5.    A complete Fatman Mustang 2 front suspension clip was installed with a power steering rack supported with a remote PS reservoir mounted in the engine compartment for fluid servicing.
6.    The center of the frame has an X frame set up to prevent flex as the OldsRod is driven aggressively.
7.    A Fatman 4-link system was fabricated into the rear of the OldsRod to improve handling both front and back.
8.    Next Air Ride with AccuAir ride height control system was installed both back & front with 3 different ride heights. The air tank and controls were installed in the truck in a special compartment that allows you to service the unit easily.
9.    The Optima battery is also installed in the trunk compartment next to the Air Ride system with a cutoff switch in the engine compartment on the passenger side near the frame.
10.    The rear-end is called a Trans-AM built tough unit geared for high end cruising speeds with still the punch at low end.
11.    Frame was painted black when the body was off and the underside of the body was completely shot with undercoating to prevent rust and road noise.
12.    Fuel storage was next so a custom made tank was made that fits up under the back of the OldsRod and didnt interfere with suspension or exhaust. Gas filler is in the trunk on the drivers side.
13.    All Brake lines and gas lines were custom made to fit the OldsRod and not leak or cause other problems.
14.    Finally, the OldsRod was ready for an exhaust system that gave the car the perfect sound. A complete Dyno-Max dual exhaust system did the trick.
Engine:
1.    The engine compartment is clearly one of the high points with OldsRod.
2.    The engine is a GM ZZ4 350 crate motor that makes 355+ horsepower.
         - Aluminum Heads.
         - Steel roller cam.
         - 4 Bolt main block.
         - High silicon pistons.
         - Strong PM connecting rods.
         - HEI distributor with timing advance.
         - Dual plane aluminum intake manifold.
         - 8 high-RPM torsional damper.
         - DeMon 4-barrel carburetor.
         - Hooker coated headers.

3. Next a Billet Specialties V-Trac polished billet front end unit was added with; polished brackets, Alternator, A/C compressor, Power steering pump, and water pump.
4. Cooling a 350 engine with A/C requires a radiator that will not overheat, so a custom radiator was built with some polished pieces around the sides and a 15 electric fan controlled by temperature adjusting unit has proved to keep the OldsRod cool at all times.
5. To insure the OldsRod starts and everything electrical works when needed the entire car was rewired with new technology wiring, relays, and fuses.
6. All Brake lines, cable lines, and Fluid lines were carefully built and routed to insure reliability.
7. The final touch to the engine compartment was to fabricate an engine cover that was very cool and not done before on any other car. The finished product was a 2 piece intake cover with skirts and a set of valve covers with snap on billet name plates that spell OldsRod on the plates.
8. Next the engine cover and the valve covers were painted the same color as the car with the flames on the exterior of the OldsRod duplicated on the custom built engine cover. WOW this really looks great.

Summary:

The oldsRod was found in an old warehouse in Oakland, California 15+ years ago.it needed some real love to bring it to the level it is today.
It can be said that the owner really loved this old Oldsmobile and was determined to make it a hot rod that everyone would really want to own. He spent more than a decade building and redoing this car he loved and the cost was not an issue, the end result was a car he could be sure there were no others like his OldsRod.

The OldsRod has been completed now for several years, but look at it. The care and storage of this car has left it in excellent shape.

When we take it out people say where did this car come from?? Thats because the owner was every private and after finishing the build he all most never took it out and was happy to just display it in his personal shop.
